I’ve been waiting for Kitchen Mouse to open for months! It finally opened up a few weeks ago and Michael and I went to their soft opening. I’ve always wanted to live in a more walkable neighborhood, one with restaurants, stores, bars, etc. It’s finally happening! Figueroa street in Highland Park is “re developing” lets say, I’m tired of hearing the word gentrification. As it is sad to see some of these local business go, quite a few of them were run down and looked as though no one was putting any heart into them any more. I’m excited to see what pops up on this street but I’m keeping my fingers crossed it doesn’t get out of control. We just got a pop physique, a starbucks down the road and there’s talk of a Whole foods – hoping no more chains go in! I really like the way this little pocket of Highland Park is right now. I can walk down the street sleepy eyed to Antigua or the new Kitchen Mouse for coffee without running into someone I know, I can quickly run over to the small farmers market for a tomato while the waters boiling, the market is never busy, I can always find parking – I guess its the quietness I like. I can hear the train at night, on sleepless nights it’s a reminder that there is life outside of my bedroom.
Back to Kitchen Mouse – the menu here is all vegan and gluten free with the exception of eggs.
This is our favorite dish there so far, the Avocado Toast. Its gluten free millet toast, dijon aioli, maple tempeh (so good), avocado, tomato, herbs with an egg on top. It’s tasty, if you go there I highly recommend getting this. This is their open face vegan ruben – the best vegan gluten free one you’ll ever find probably.
